Day 5 and there was no Alexi Laiho doing a swan song for Australia with a draw. Zaheer mopped them up in pretty quick time. Johnson might have done a ‘dizzy’ but couldn’t. Australia was truly trashed.
I am deeply disappointed with the way Australia played. It is the not the first time Australia has lost a test match and nor will be the last, but I have never seen an Australian team stop short of literally playing the fiddle… No spirit, no fight… So un-Australian. Hell, even in that Perth test when they were going down, there was a fight… A fight which makes Australia such a respected team.
I have respected Ricky Ponting for his captaincy and his aggression in trying to win from any situation. I never believed that he was ‘merely’ a captain who was blessed with a ‘great team’. Some of the statements and actions which have come out from him now reflect a man who doesn’t have faith in this team, almost reinforcing that ‘yes’, am useless without those ’star’ bowlers.
Ricky, you don’t have a shitty team… They are still the best out there in the world. Sure, Lee was a huge let-down but you ought to back your best bowler, not piss him off, as though Hussey could save Australia with the ball.
Is it rocket science to understand that the two Indian openers are the key to subduing India? You watched it unfold in Bangalore and nearly pulled it off. And what did you do in this test match? Spread the field… Like 11 giant Australian nipples that screamed “Milk me, Milk me”.
By far, Lee might have been ordinary but you certainly did not give the best chance to your bowlers in picking wickets. And you won’t win a match like this. You never have by the way in this fashion.
There is so much being spoken about the reverse swing. Let’s be honest, the Australians have never been great exponents of reverse swing. Surely, they did not win a series the last time around with reverse swing, so why the panic in their camp?
For the Indians, I am pleased to see Amit Mishra do well in his debut. Sure, the mainstream media will be all over him. They will speak to his family, his unborn kids and rave. For a change, read through some of our blogs in this network and see the faith we have time and again, relentlessly put on you… You made us proud. To be honest, in the first innings, I thought he bowled below par with too many dolly half trackers being offered, but he got a fiver with some great deliveries. In the second innings, it was as good as I have seen him bowl in the domestic matches, but he was not that successful.
And what were the selectors thinking? They picked him for the first two tests and slated him to play the challenger trophy while the other two tests unfold. So did they pick him with just the intention of handing out the towels? Is it merely ok to pick people just to give a glimpse of the star life in the Indian national team? If Kumble was not injured, he might have well been a passing bird.
The wisdom of Australia’s approach to the second innings was ridiculous. Sure, you can’t block for a draw and the best chance of playing out those sessions was in being positive. But their brand of positive cricket was the twenty-20 style of hitting out. When you normally can’t last 20 overs in that fashion, did you actually believe you can survive 140 overs that way? Jeez.
Australia could have saved this one if they had remained positive like Clarke and Haddin and not overdo that positivity.
There are two more tests. They nearly had Bangalore and now they lost this one. The next two are absolute flat-bedders that traditionally spin viciously. Australia can draw the series but if this test is an indication of the strategies and mind-set of the team, then it is going to be difficult.
Mathew Hayden and Andrew Symonds have been the single biggest difference when playing with India. Symonds is out and Hayden may well find the much needed inspiration. It was a pity to see Jacques injured and somewhere in the outback is Shaun Marsh lost amid some strange selection policies.
Peter Siddle bowled decently but there is Doug Bollinger who has been the better performer sitting in the cold. Strange considering he was in the recent ‘A’ tour and did quite well. To say that there is not a single spinner in the ranks is puzzling and perhaps a reflection of how unfair the criticism meted out to the likes of Hogg have gone in emptying the treasury rather prematurely.
Anil Kumble will be back in the next test. The team selection to include the champion will be troubled. The approach to the next two games will be predictably different to this one. Dhoni looks a different player when he is the captain, almost as if he deliberately throws his wicket when he is not at the helm. India look tougher with Dhoni at the helm.
The biggest plus that came out for me with Dhoni on the captaincy was making Harbhajan bowl that off-stump line and he was vicious. How some of us bloggers have been screaming this out! Rocket-science huh? 300 was not to be, but he will in this series.
Two more tests, the English will prematurely be licking their lips for the ashes. India might be fancying a series win. Bottom line, there are big problems in the path to the future of Indian cricket and nobody has a clue how to address it… This will serve as a big distraction.
For Australia, yet again it is all up to Mathew Hayden. Their fans can be assured that he won’t be talking in the ‘third person’ anymore. The most significant observation came from an Aussie cricket fan. “So this is how the world feels when they played against Australia for a decade”.
Golden words!

The Australians lacked intensity in this match, now the big question is, will India be able to maintain their Intensity level in the next match? if so then they will definitely win this series.
good analysis with interesting observations…scorpy!
first congrats on win…!!
after reading your post am wondering are wee seeing our future…viz a viz expected mass retirements?
Honestly, Wasim… I don’t care a hoot if India maintains this or not… some obvious questions for the future needs to be addressed with all due respect to the past… we cannot possibly go on like this.
SP.. all I seek is that they address it like men… you have players making tall statement in the media and you have the officials making statements… none has the balls to address these important questions.
“like 11 giant Australian nipples that screamed “Milk me, Milk meâ€.”
Imagine.
Almost poetic.
Good analysis and by problems are you referring to the change of guard or the captaincy issue?
Both Otts… am appalled after all this, both sides are not even discussing it eye to eye… so much so that two greats have openly challenged in the media that they will go on their one terms and by no one else. Sure they might deserve to go that way but since when has this been taken for granted as their right. The question to me… what is the roadmap now? Will people be dropped for lack of form or not.
The Ausssies were pathetic but lets not take away anything from the Indian bowlers…Its not often that you see all four bowlers bowling well and giving no respite to the batsmen…Shastri says that if Kumble comes back lets play five bowlers…I dont think we need that…this attack has enough weapons…Sadly that means Amit Mishra will be dropped again )-:
I really dont want to see Kumble back in the team. I agree next match is in delhi.. But at the form he is currently in even delhi wont help. And Amit Mishra is playing really well.. The whole team is playing well under MSD… Then y change the team?
Av.. shastri’s idea of 5 bowlers is way over the top LOL.
trideep… I have nothing against Kumble as such… it is a strange dilemma… but if he is not completely fit, a total 100%, then he should himself offer not to play. On a different issue, the roadmap for the future has to be actively discussed.
Scorpi,
Good analysis that but I must differ from you on Kumble.
What is forgotten in the Dhoni love fest is that Kumble stood himself down because of fitness. This is the same man who came out, jaw bandaged and trapped Lara LBW in the West Indies.
I think you underestimate the depth of feeling in this side to win and win comprehensively.
Australia had their moment, in the post tea session of the first day of the first test. And they muffed it.
Dont expect the Indians to give the Aussies any latitude from here on in.
Cheers,
Scorpi,
In current form, even if Kumble is fit, Mishra shud get a look in ahead of him wrt performance
Yup Homer… he is definitely one of the good blokes around… Whether Kumble plays or not is immaterial actually… though right now it is a great opportunity to recover fully rather than stretch those injuries. I don’t believe he is to be dusted off but at the same time, it is high time, these senior players discuss with the selectors their roadmap. For the kind of bowler that he is, 2 years at least can be reckoned but everyone knows he ain’t going that far. but he has to come clean on the injuries because this point India can afford to try out their fringes.
It’s a hard one isn’t it Trideep… at least you are very clear in the way forward… am still wondering.
Scorpi, I feel performance shud be the only criteria to be in the team. And as per that.. Kumble shud not be there.. whether he is retiring or not is a different question. I feel he shud retire because I dont see him getting better.. not fitness.. but his form.. it wid only be a slight improvement over his current form. Hence its better for him to leave rather than being thrown out.
Scorpi,
There are England, Pakistan and New Zealand in this cricket season for us to blood youngsters. Australia is not the time or series to replace captains and spin bowlers and start charting courses for seniors.
The way I look at it, post the NZ tour, we have 6 months of no Test cricket before we play SL at home. Which is a perfect cut off point for a few careers.
In the interim, there are England (2), Pakistan (3) and New Zealand (3) tests in which the next gen can be eased in and out of the team to get a flavor of international cricket.
So, assuming Badri replaces Saurav, we can have Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina alternating with Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman in the 8 Tests – RD and VVS can take the #3 slot while Raina and Sharma take the #6 slot.
Cheers,
Good post and a good win for India.
The signs were there last season itself…India’s own poor choice of openers then, the home den aggression of Australia, and the B-B que team of white aproned chefs helped cook and conceal the flaws which were all there for the world to see.
A section of cricket followers may continue to live in denial but it was evident then that Australia was pretending to be Australaia rather than be Australia.
The team which is playing now does not even pretend to be Australia…the odd sorry comment is all that harks back to a great Australian era of verbal volleys backed by true deeds (sometimes assisted…and the superficial nature of those odd comments is such that they do not event attempt to lend anything beyond a veneer of Australianness. It must be the state of global economy – Australian cheese must now contain chalk with just a dash of cheese essence.
There are two more to go and India must not lift its foot from the Ozzie throat.
Like the recent victories for India, this too came as a contributory effort from all members of the team. Good show.
Could Laxman be made the fall guy to accomodate Kumble?
As far as the said Australian fan’s comment is concerned…he/she cannot know what the world felt or how it suffered the Ozzies, their loose tongue on and off the field (you still see it reflected on some Ozzie blogs and forum posts), the distortion of how the game is to be played (they were the original George Bush…not George Bush himself), and how we suffered the cowardliness of umpires sucking up to an aggressive team and country.
No…that Australian fan you mention, does not know, cannot know, and will never know how the world felt when playing Australia…ever!
Homer… that’s an interesting path… that 6 month break might be the ideal time… I do not know about Rohit, I feel he should spend more time playing domestic… more matches under his belt… his ‘a’ tour hundred was the second of his career and that clearly reflects that we are hurrying him up.. A good talent no doubt, but no point in rushing him.
I like this window plan… I reckon post NZ series or at the NZ series may be the ideal time. Kotla is kumble’s favourite hunting ground and he will be licking his lips for sure. But what do you make out of Kumble’s talk on going out considering he said Bangalore was the last one off his home ground.
Trideep… tough call… Kumble’s favourite hunting ground is coming up next and he may want to play for the love of that ground… My belief is that he is not bowling well because he has an annoying injury, so the hope is that post-recovery, he might just get back the edge. I reckon now, a Mishra can wait a bit. But the catch is the type of injury that Kumble has… it is not something which can be healed in a week.
Soulberry… It would be really sad if Laxman is made the fall guy again LOL… either way, if Kumble is fit, it may well be right that he plays and Mishra bids his time.
I agree in all fairness, that Australian fan cannot possibly know how the world felt about Australia walloping everyone. In India, we were insulated with most of the bi-lateral series but you cannot forget that world cup
.
Oh you let it rip.
BTW, what do you reckon about this reverse swing business… we knew Zak could do it a bit… doesn’t it come across as something strange… considering the extend of this swing which I have never seen before here in India.
It could genuinely mean that finally there is some quality in the fresh blood of Ishanth’s, RPs or are we doing an England… you reckon there are some mints floating around. Am sure this match referee with his famous bias must be scanning hard.
Scorpi,
Like I said before – I think you underestimate the depth of feeling in this side to win and win comprehensively.
Anil Kumble epitomizes that. And retirement talk is a distraction he does not need.
Mishra will do well to spend time in the dressing room, and even better is he hangs around Kumble. It will be a great learning experience for the lad.
Cheers,
LOL Homer… no doubt this is their best chance to win comprehensively… but a win now may not be so thrilling as a win few years ago for the quality of the team here. We should have won in Australia if not for some jackasses helping them.
Kotla is his favourite ground and let’s wish him the best here to whip up another tenner.
