Last night’s match between India and Pakistan was good. Ouch, It hurt but actually not much. The euphoria of these matches like in the last few decades are no longer there with sanity prevailing and everyone at home had no qualms switching over to HBO to watch “The Bucket list”. That was a good movie.
India’s loss to Pakistan yesterday was well on the cards. The Indian fast bowling attack in recent times is nothing short of being described as totally retarded. Last night, the slow toddlers also failed and Harbhajan had a bad day and with that went the only saving grace.
Ishanth Sharma, the future stalwart of the Indian bowling attack reminds me of the good old days when cars were on carburetors and contact points for the ignition system. You would need a good 5 minutes to warm up the car on idle before you can even think of engaging it on gear and taking off. Now this is a bowler for the future in the current era of MPFI, CRDI engines and electronic controlled ignition systems.
Ishanth needs a good continuous spell of 5 overs at least before he can somewhat start getting a decent line and length. If the batsman takes him to the cleaners within that 5, he would need another 50 overs just for his brain to assimilate the information that he is actually a fast bowler and that he can use the whole width of the popping crease to create angles, change pace or come around the wicket for left-handers to negate his inability to swing both ways.
That makes him rubbish for all short formats of the game and leaves him in the hope of making it count in test cricket. You keep hearing about him from the commies on why criticism should not be meted out to him and that he is young and will learn with exposure.
Yeah. They are right. Except, is the International stage the place for anyone to learn the basics? What in the world is the domestic cricket circuit then there for? Horticulture?
Nehra can somewhat be spared but if you take into account his experience, he shouldn’t. There are not much options now available and that is his saving grace. R.P. Singh has been baffling with hot and cold and what has gone missing is that streak of street smartness that often got him back on track during a match.
Dhoni and the team management on the composition has actually been the biggest culprit. On flat, slow pitches in Sri Lanka, they opted for three fast bowlers in rubbish form and barely scrapped through. Yesterday, on a similar type of pitch in South Africa, they leave out Amit Mishra, a quality leggie.
I hope now for the future they would
- Drop one of the fast bowlers preferably ishanth or draw straws. They are all the same.
- Bring in Mishra. For google’s sake, he bats way better than R.P. or Ishanth. He has the capability to get 10 decent overs out. Besides, an attack with 2 fast bowlers, 2 quality spinners and a pie chucker makes a balanced diet.
- Don’t mess with Raina and his batting position. Unlike Dhoni, he has the balls to lay it thick and thin in the number 3 position. In flat sub-continental wickets, you could watch Dhoni not have the courage to walk in at number 3 when the first wicket goes down with the new ball. Considering he is now making a good career prodding around and stealing runs rather than shoveling his way, it should have been his stable position. No, not Dhoni. He will run away from the new ball whether it swings or not and in South Africa, there are no marks for even guessing.
- Give Abhishek Nayar a few games. At least, he doesn’t wear hideous sun glasses.
300 could have been chased on that track and they nearly pulled it off as against what the scorecard margins suggest. Virat made a rash mistake and I pray not to hear any sound bytes in the media on “That’s how I play and that is my natural game” a la Rohit Sharma. I would have to pull out the chaos of the pineapple campaign from the closet again. Virat comes across as a sensible kid and hope he puts this in his bucket list.
Rahul Dravid was frankly disappointing. While this might sound harsh, it has to be asked what exactly is the concept of the role of a well-set batsman.
He took his time to get set at the start and that was perfect. Mid-way and at the closing stages, the run-rate was going up and the need of the hour was to take calculated risks mixed with risk-free cricket to be in line of striking distance of the required rate.
A new batsman walks in and therefore logically the well-set batsmen who is seeing the ball well takes the role of those calculated risky scoring shots.
But no, not Dravid. He had to leave that to the new inexperienced batsmen while he continued prodding.
I miss V.V.S. Laxman.
Back to the fast bowlers, Gary was right. They should indeed ‘go solo’.
Wankers, all of them.

indeed scorpy dhoni and team management should take most of the blame…
of late dhoni seems to be flexible about his batting position only rest goes to fixed set plans…
so even if yusuf can’t bat bowl and field he is the first name to be written in team list along with friend RP… must say both don’t deserve to be in squad leave alone in final xi…
ishant is clearly not fit… and when ur body is not fit mind just freezes… but he still plays coz ad world likes him… while the earnest and non backing players like mishra cool the heels seeing bhajj bowling darts after darts… pathan pretending spin…
and yet somehow we are no. 1… goes to show how cheap and misleading ranking can be
I can agree with the arguments about our pace bowling, Bhajji and the captaincy/tactics. But then you go and praise Kohli!
In all fairness, wasn’t his fault, but I don’t understand why Rohit Sharma is being treated so harshly… He seemed like the natural replacement for Yuvraj. And Dravid’s reinstatement has only added to everybody’s confusion. Sometimes you’ve just got to let go…
Good Stuff Scorpi!
SP… another loss and they will be at number 5! Rankings are rubbish
though it is nice to see a tournament where there are no clear favourites. Cricket has become interesting again.
Ach… Praise Kohli? eh… didn’t get it. I’m not lynching Kohli. He got out by a moment of rashness and it is ok, coming in new to the team, he might learn from this. Ought to give him chances. I just hope he doesn’t do a Rohit a la “playing stupidly again and again on the mistakes and act like Sehwag in the media”, considering the fact that there are no notable scores in his career graph.
Dravid’s reinstatement indeed has confused everything but I feel Laxman could have been a way better choice.
One big rant LOL.
Cheers dude.
Scorpi,
Ishanth needs to toughen up a bit…attitude wise. He’s got all the attributes but doesnt seem to produce for some reason. I’m not sure who your bowling coach is but they need to work with him.
I would pick Mishra ahead of Harbhajan as the main spinner.
I think your beinh harsh on Dravid. He played the perfec tinnings for others to play around him but as the others flopped, his innings looked pointless. A batsmen of his ilk is needed in a ODI side.
Stani,
The bowling coach is venkatesh prasad and he has done very well as the coach for India. He produced dramatic improvement in the fast bowling quality. It has slipped badly in recent times.
It is obvious that the bowlers have become complacent. Now both Ashish and RP are bowling hot and cold. That can be fixed. Ishanth has been a cold turkey in the shorter formats for a long time and it now leads to the basics of skill. He doesn’t seem to posses the control anymore to put balls in the areas that he wants to. Therefore, he ought to go back to the nets, domestic cricket and regain that accuracy.
Yes, I could well be harsh on Dravid. He started off well but to watch him pile the pressure on Yousuf when he was the well set one who had to take the lead set me off.
Besides, it doesn’t matter what type of pitch he plays on nowadays… flat belter or seaming scorchers, he always is struggling and battling hard to compile runs. Something is wrong.
I am in complete agreement with everyone.:)
Good to see you back in action otts
On your final point Scorpi….maybe he has a lot of pressure on him? He needs to be told that he’s the anchor and a regular and others will play around him…..and the others need to start doing this, it will make him look better.
The thing with Dravid is that he just does not wanna give his wicket away (hence ‘the wall’). Though this is an admirable quality, in certain situations, like flat tracks as you suggested, this mind set can have negative consequences.
MSD and his #3.. completely agree with your views on MSD as a batter.
Are Yusuf Pathan and Ravi Bopara related? They HAVE to be in their respective playing XI, it seems.
hideous sun glasses for sure
There is no place for both a prodding Dhoni and a prodding Dravid.
Good point Stani… I believe the management and the captain has put it across on him being the anchor and others play around him. That’s even in public. Being a regular will naturally be based on performances and he starts becoming fluent again, nobody will raise a question. He has been a legendary and self-less player for India and all of a sudden in the last 2 years, there is a change in him.
Yesterday, Shoaib and Yousuf demonstrated what being an achor is. Taking time is one thing but when set making that count for the team goals is where it lies and am afraid he just did not take the initiative to ease the pressure on the new guys.
Hope he comes good. Cheers Stani.
Ravi Bopara case is quite interesting, Namya. I have a feeling that he often tries to over-construct an innings. I have not seen much of Bopara since the India tour. What is now a pleasant surprise is that England can actually play one days quite well, when they infuse new blood. Morgan made a huge impact yesterday.
Anyone playing for the odds of England winning the champions trophy
?
Welcome back RS… Hope you enjoyed your time-off or was it horrible work? I have no problem with MSD prodding. His game has changed and it is ok. What I hate about him is hiding behind mama’s skirt when it doesn’t suit him and pitching in a fall-guy. Sometime back, Guru Greg accused Ganguly of doing that.
I love the Ishant and the cars with carb comparison. It’s dead on. Perhaps the dude should be made to warm up for 5 -6 overs just before the game instead of admiring his stupid shot in the new pepsi ad.
Dhoni- he’s a sneaky lil fox. Pushes himself up the order when India’s playing well , batting first , and typically in sub-continental conditions. Allows him to consume a few, settle down. When the going’s tough, he gets exposed like Mallika Sherawat thighs.
Harbhajan is one of the most frustrating dudes in recent times. With that 1 damn Eden Gardens test match, he his built up this legend status for himself. I’m still waiting for him to show us why he should be considered the fron tline spinner for the team.
In my opinion the bowling coach should be fired with the exception of Zaheer Khan none of the Indian pace bowlers can bowl a yorker none of them have can bowl a well directed vicious bouncer , I can understand most of them are not very tall but atleast Ishaant should he is quite tall, the moment they join national team their speed starts declining. They all bowl in low 130’s or mid 120’s that’s not fast that is medium pace. It doesn’t matter which one you will drop the problem is who you will replace him with. The amount of money these guys are making in IPL they don’t want to risk an injury. I think this is the main reason some of them are not bowling with a big heart and not bending their backs.
I agree with you on Dravid he was extremely selfish anybody can drop the anchor and score runs but if you don’t accelerate at the right time and always expect the youngster on the other end to launch the attack and finish the job then you are just scoring runs for yourself and making life difficult for others.
Good Point Wasim… Perhaps Prasad can be held a bit guilty for not dong enough to get the bowlers to practice well directed short balls and yorkers. Two things, which are totally absent in Indian bowlers. Every one of them have this in their arsenal at the start of their careers and then they lock it into their closets. Zaheer started his career with so many surprise yorkers and within a short time that ball was shelved. So did Ishanth and RP.
The problem the IPL has presented is largely on hiding injuries. People will risk playing with injuries and worsen it. As for Dravid, he seems to have a few problems and it will help if someone speaks to him and sort it out.
Yes,Mishra needs to play. And if Shades needs to sit out for Nayar, so be it.
