The fastest bowler in the world is an Indian!
Posted on Feb 20, 2008 by Scorpicity |
Well, at least in the women’s cricket circuit! Behold, Jhulan Goswami, the Indian women’s cricket team’s strike bowler who reaches speeds around the 120 kmph mark, which can put to shame many bowlers in the men’s circuit
.
Jhulan will hopefully go on to become the leading bowler in the world in the near future. She had a great start picking up the ICC women’s cricketer of the year award and her figures so far look good. In tests she averages 16.36 and in the ODIs, 20.77 with an economy rate of 2.00 and 3.13 respectively.
What brought my attention was like most average kids in India, it all started by playing cricket on the streets with the boys with a tennis ball and this typically is the sight and sound of an evening in India. As you know, street cricket is my love, where the average kiddo may never try to play with an actual cricket ball or try out their talent at a professional level due to the money involved for the equipment and the ever annoying studies-only parental control. And it gets even worse with a girl child, as it is like a taboo for girls to play! I’m glad she has good parents/mentors that brought this talent to the world.
Cheers for girl power.
Now, this got me going to compile a list of new ball fast bowlers around in the men’s circuit, who could only bowl in the 120s
.
Shoot those names folks in the comments sections.
To start with, I can think of
1. Venkatesh Prasad
2. Debashish Mohanty
3. Fanie De villiers
4. Roger Binny (he takes the cake!)

The previous fastest female bowler was a Victorian, so Jhulan is in good company.

You know Scorpi, I saw a few telecast matches of on DD sports back when the English ladies were visiting. Not only does this lady, Jhulan, have pace, she has bowling nous and can swing the ball both ways. She is the McGrath of Women’s cricket…and not just because of comparablke physical stature.

Soulberry… swing too :)…lovely… I have not seen here or somehow don’t recollect her but her face is familiar… I wonder what is the state of international fixtures for them… how often do they play? Any series coming up.
